Crafting Unique Stories for UCW’s 2025 Convocations Using Event Videography Techniques
At Threshold Studios, we believe that every event, no matter how similar, holds its own unique story. This belief was put to the test and beautifully proven when we partnered with University Canada West (UCW) to produce their convocation videos for both their Spring and Fall 2025 ceremonies.
For any university, convocation is a cornerstone event – a day of immense pride, achievement, and new beginnings. For an event videography Vancouver team like ours, the challenge becomes: how do you capture the essence of such a significant, yet inherently similar, event twice in the same year, ensuring each video feels fresh and distinct?
The Challenge: Familiarity Breeds (Creative) Opportunity
Convocations, by nature, follow a similar structure: speeches, regalia, proud families, and the momentous walk across the stage. This presented a unique creative puzzle for the Threshold Studios team. Not only were the ceremonies structurally similar, but some key speakers even delivered identical scripts across both events. How do you craft two compelling, yet distinct, narratives from such parallel content?
Our Solution: Crafting Unique Narratives from Shared Moments
Our approach was rooted in meticulous planning and a deep dive into the raw audio. Instead of relying on a linear progression of speeches, we adopted a more fluid, narrative-driven editing style.
For each ceremony, we painstakingly scoured the audio recordings, identifying key phrases, emotional inflections, and impactful statements. These isolated audio snippets became the building blocks for each video’s unique voiceover. By carefully selecting and sequencing these fragments, we were able to craft a bespoke story for the Spring convocation and an equally distinct narrative for the Fall event, even when the original speeches shared common themes or exact wording. It wasn’t about what was said in full, but the specific moments of impact we chose to highlight.
The 3-Second Hook: Engaging Graduates with a Unique Visual
We understand that in today’s fast-paced digital world, the first three seconds of any video are crucial for audience engagement. For UCW’s convocation videos, we wanted something truly unique that would immediately grab attention and create a lasting memory for the graduates.
Our creative solution? A custom-cut plexiglass panel.
To pull off this unique visual, we used a custom rig: a plexiglass sheet mounted directly in front of our lens via a magic arm. This setup allowed us to remain mobile while inviting graduates to ‘sign the lens’ as they approached the camera. It wasn’t just a recording station; it was an interactive, integrated part of our filming process that transformed a standard shot into a high-impact opening.
